Dad needs to move to MC or Nursing Home. Sis and I have checked both and are unclear which is the better placement. He now has 24/7 caregiving but will not be continuing that. Surprisingly, MC accepted him even though he is unable to sit up, stand up or walk alone. He is mostly bed bound except for 2-3 days a week when a certain cg has special magic and motivates him to get in his recliner to watch movies/football, & leave his apt. to eat. Other than that, he lays in his hospice bed all day, every day to "rest" and mostly just drinks Boost (sometimes string cheese, chocolate, rice cake). Dad has late moderate/severe dementia (6e on the FAST test although he has a few conditions in Level 7). Sis wants him in MC as she likes the newer facility better. I don't have a preference, just whatever is best. He has enough snap that he would know the people in MC are "off" but he doesn't really get out anyway and doesn't care to socialize. He still remembers family and has snap but sometimes says off the wall things. MC has seen that he cannot get out of bed by himself although he tried. They would check on him every 2-3 hours, staff certified for Alzheimers/MC trained. They say he can stay there till end of life. Hospice nurse said the NH will have a Hoyer lift but not sure why he would need that (he's on hospice). The difference in cost is not a factor. Any thoughts, ideas, questions we need to know? Thanks!

Thank you everyone for your comments/suggestions. I truly appreciate it. My siblings (3 of us) make decisions as a family; I am MPOA and brother is POA and sis is there locally. She wants to have him continue at IL with 24/7 caregiving until he uses all of his LTC insurance (10 months, cost is insane). I disagree. LTC insurance would also apply to NH.
I just spoke to his hospice social worker. She mentioned "personal care homes". I know what she's talking about as we had a caregiver start one in another city. Does anyone have experience with this? Thoughts?

Sounds like a nursing home is the best choice. Sorry you’re going through this with your dad

If he can't get around the best place for him would probably be a nursing home. Memory care for a sick person still with it enough to realize the people in memory care are 'off' will be a scary place. If he's not a flight risk, he shouldn't have to deal with people flipping out, screaming, and going crazy because it's sundown time. Or have to deal with these people wandering the halls all night and coming into his room. Your father is under hospice so he'd be better off with skilled nursing care available to him and not having to deal with memory care.

If he is not a flight risk and is mostly bedbound I'd recommend nursing home. He will have access to a lot more activities and will have a lot more interaction with staff.

Thanks for the info. He’s financially secure and doesn’t qualify for Medicaid; money is not an issue. We just want to find the right placement for him.

I would choose the NH because I think they will check on him more often and he would be safer.

Is there any reason he doesn't qualify for LTC? His doctor would assess him. If he does, then it's possible to also apply for Medicaid for him. If he qualifies both medically and financially, then Medicaid covers his medical care and his SS benefit covers his custodial care.

I can't see any benefit to memory care, he seems beyond the possibility of taking part in special programs and he's not at risk of wandering. The nursing home has the skills to provide the physical care he needs and probably has a higher number of staff per resident. And the lifts are a real benefit, they not only save the backs of the caregivers they allow residents to get out of bed and into wheelchairs to leave their rooms or just sit for a while. One benefit loved by all the residents at my mom's nursing home was the big spa bath tub.

We have toured one NH and 2 MC. We are trying to decide between NH or MC not ALF. Thanks!

It certainly sounds like he needs memory care as his needs are beyond assisted living. Be aware that if he needs any skilled nursing that’s generally not available at MC and he would need a nursing home.

It sounds like maybe you’ve done some research but haven’t actually met with the admissions people and taken any tours? When you do they will ask you a long list of questions to determine if their facility could be right for your person, you won’t have to guess.

Sorry, I didn't see where I could edit the post. He needs help with everything; dressing, changing diapers/briefs, sitting up, rolling over, he can eat/drink mostly by himself.
